Do you have to eat more FATs while breastfeeding? Has anyone breastfed and gained weight instead of lost it?

angel mumzie asked:

I mean, breastfeeding is suppose to help you slim down as long as you eat balanced calories, right? But is there anyone who actually gains more weight post-partum, while still breastfeeding?
I mean, you can still overfeed yourself while doing this, can you? My doctor advised me to add more fat into my usually fat-free diet. He says my milk needs those extra fat because I’m skinny, is this true?
Does this mean that ALL the fats I eat will go to my milk?
I don’t normally eat high-fat diet, so it’s really difficult to me, not to mention the “eew” factor.

    You burn calories nursing which is why you can eat a few more calories and still lose weight. You don’t want to diet while nursing, baby needs that extra fat for brain development. You don’t have to eat high fat foods and you don’t have to eat a lot of fat just eat things that have fat in them, no fat is dieting and isn’t the best when nursing. Milk is a great source of fat if the baby can tolerate that but my boys were lactose intolerant so everytime i drank milk they got sick. I lost weight while nursing/pumping.

    I don’t think you need to add much fat.

    Below is a cut-and-paste from the le leche league website:

    Maternal Nutrition during Breastfeeding:

    “The following are the main groups of foods that should be included in the daily diet.

    Fresh vegetables and fruits (preferably those in season) of all types, eaten raw or cooked;
    Different grains (wheat, rice, corn, barley, millet) preferably whole, in various forms, in the form of whole or broken kernels, as well as semolina and flour (and products made from them including bread and pasta);
    Protein foods from animal sources (dairy products, eggs, meat and fish) and/or plant sources (lentils, beans, soybeans);
    Small quantities of fats, preferably uncooked, cold-pressed vegetable oils.”

    " Qué afecta a la cantidad de grasa y a calorías en un mother' ¿leche de s?
    Mom' ¿dieta de s? La investigación nos dice ese mom' la dieta de s no afecta a la cantidad media de grasa o a calorías en su leche. Sin embargo, la mamá puede cambiar los tipos de grasa en su leche alterando los tipos de grasas que ella coma (Lorenzo 1999, P. 106-113, 300-305; Hamosh 1996, Hamosh 1991, P. 123-124). Un aumento de un ácido graso se podía esperar generalmente para ocurrir simultáneamente con una disminución de otro. Por ejemplo, un estudio ha demostrado que las madres negras en Suráfrica que comen una dieta tradicional del maíz tienen menos ácido graso monunsaturated en su leche que las madres urbanas que consumieron proteínas y grasas más animales (van der Westhuyzen 1988). Of course you can gain weight while breastfeeding.

    The amount of fat in your milk is not influenced by your diet, but the type of fat is. However if you don’t eat enough fat you may suffer.

    * Mom’s diet? The research tells us that mom’s diet does not affect the average amount of fat or calories in her milk. However, mom can change the types of fat in her milk by altering the types of fats that she eats (Lawrence 1999, p. 106-113, 300-305; Hamosh 1996, Hamosh 1991, p. 123-124). An increase of one fatty acid could generally be expected to occur concurrently with a decrease in another. For example, one study has shown that black mothers in South Africa who eat a traditional maize diet have less monunsaturated fatty acid in their milk than urban mothers who consumed more animal proteins and fats (van der Westhuyzen 1988).

    * The degree of emptiness of the breast is what research has shown to drive breastmilk fat content, and thus calorie content. The fuller the breast, the lower the fat content of the milk; The emptier the breast, the higher the fat content of the milk (Daly 1993). Do breastfeeding mothers need extra calories?

    In general, you should simply listen to your body and eat to appetite – this is usually all you need to do to get the calories you need. When exclusively nursing a young baby, it is very common to feel hungry much of the time… listen to your body. Mothers of older babies may feel hungrier when baby temporarily increases his or her milk intake (for example, during a growth spurt)… again, listen to your body. Counting calories is rarely necessary unless you are having problems maintaining a healthy weight.
    If you really want (or need) to count calories…

    Studies have shown that most healthy breastfeeding women maintain an abundant milk supply while taking in 1800-2200 (or more) calories per day. Consuming less than 1500-1800 calories per day (most women should stay at the high end of this range) may put your milk supply at risk, as may a sudden drop in caloric intake. (See Can I diet while breastfeeding? for more information on calorie restriction).

    According to Katherine A. Dettwyler, Ph.D., breastfeeding researcher and anthropologist, women throughout the world make ample amounts of quality milk while eating diets composed almost entirely of rice (or millet or sorghum) with a tiny amount of vegetables and occasional meat.

    Are healthy eating habits recommended for mom? Absolutely! You will be healthier and feel better if you eat well. It is best for anyone to eat a variety of foods, in close to their naturally-occurring state, but this is not necessary for providing quality milk or for maintaining milk supply. Although it is certainly not recommended, a breastfeeding mother could live on a diet of junk food – mom would not thrive on that diet, but her milk would still meet her baby’s needs.
